In the United States, brothers and sisters generally find themselves in some sort of rivalry while growing up, but the relationship usually turns into one of harmony as they mature, and they often help each other later in life, especially when faced with aging parents. But in Northern India, the relationship between brothers and sisters is so special, there’s an entire ceremony just to express the love and devotion between them.

It’s called Raksha Bandhan and it’s a 6,000 year-old tradition which involves the sister tying a sacred thread on her brother’s wrist, praying for his future health and happiness, and wishing him well. This thread is the “Rakhi” or thread of love, and it symbolizes the sacred bond of eternal protection shared between the siblings. Chanting of traditional prose is essential, and includes wishes for a long life, good health and well-being.

An exchange of gifts between the siblings, which symbolizes the complete acceptance of each other’s love and affection and the unconditional nature of their love, is an important part of the ceremony. Singing, dancing, and of course, feasting commence afterwards.

The festival has ancient roots, and evidence of its longevity can be found in historical accounts and religious literature, including a story about Lord Krishna and his sister, and King Bali and the Goddess Lakshmi. Both stories recount the tying of a string or piece of fabric to the wrist and the exchange of pledges of protection and love.

If brothers and sisters are unable to be together on the day of Raksha Bandhan, they still reach out to each other through phone calls or special cards sent to each other. This beautiful tradition is an integral part of the strong family relationships so prevalent in Indian culture, and has endured virtually unchanged for thousands of years.
